Hoggson Brothers, New York, architects. This brick structure was built for the First National Bank of Amherst in a burst of village improvement activity which entailed removing tenement-like wooden buildings from this site and building the Jones Library and the Lord Jeffery Inn across the common as well as this building. Bank President Ernest M. Whitcomb was the civic leader for all of this work.
