Major
Suggested courses for first-year students, including required prerequisites, in the recommended sequence:
Bachelors of Science
MATH 131/132 and MATH 233
PHYSIC 181/182 or 151/152
ASTRON 114 & 1st-year Seminar
Bachelor of the Arts:
MATH 128/129 or 131/132
PHYSIC 151/152 or 131/132
ASTRON 114 & 1st-year Seminar
Minimum G.P.A. or grades in prerequisite/predictor courses:
Students achieving less than a "B" in the Math or Physics sequences will have great difficulty.
Application procedure and recommended time to declare/apply:
See the Chief Undergraduate Advisor to declare the major as soon as possible.
Recommended General Education Courses:
No specific recommendations. Note that College requirements include proficiency in a foreign language, and for B.A.s two courses beyond Gen-Ed outside of the College.
Special Instructions
For transfers with sophomore/junior standing: see Astronomy Advisor as soon as possible.
Summary of Requirements for the Major
Astrophysics B.S.
This track is recommended for students who want to eventually pursue a Ph.D.
PHYSIC 181-182-284-287 (and associated labs), 281, 282, 421, 422, 423, 424
MATH 131, 132, 233, 331 (or computational versions of these courses)
ASTRON 114, 335, 451 or 452, plus one more at the 300+ level, and junior year writing.
Space Sciences B.S.
Recommended for students pursuing an astronomy-related professional career after graduation. Majors in this track must develop a plan to complete course requirements with their advisor.
PHYSIC 151-152-287 (and associated labs), 281, and two more 3-credit 400+ level courses
MATH 131, 132, 233 (or computational versions of these courses)
ASTRON 114, 335, two courses at the 200+ level, one at the 300+ level, and junior year writing
Astronomy B.A.
This track is designed for careers in teaching, museum work, science writing, pre-med, etc. Students must develop a plan of study with their astronomy advisor to complete all credit requirements.
PHYSIC 131-132 or 151-152 (and associated labs)
MATH 127-128 or 131-132 (or computational version)
ASTRON 114, 224 or 225, 335, junior year writing, two courses at any level and 8 additional credits at the 300+ level in Astronomy or closely related courses in other departments.
Minor
Requirements:
ASTRON 114 and four additional courses at the 200+ level.
